The brutal murder of George Floyd touched me more deeply than any news lately. Even though we know that police brutality and the targeting of black people is constant, seeing it with my own eyes made it inescapable. Every time I close my eyes, I see the gruesome image of his murder. My heart truly breaks that another life has been unnecessarily taken. By hate. By indifference. By racism.
I feel heartbroken, but I don’t matter. No, I am white and privileged and I cannot even begin to imagine what it is like to live in fear, to know the authorities won’t protect me or my family. For me, this was a shock. For many people, it’s a daily reality.
Anti-racism movement does not need a white person’s perspective. So, for the first time since I created my blog, I’m reblogging someone else’s post. This is an incredibly important podcast that shares the feelings that this tragedy triggered and the structural failures of the American government.
This government is failing and it’s doing so terribly. America cannot stand forever if it is on this path. A breaking point is being reached. Every great empire thought itself to be invincible but, eventually, live on only in the nostalgia of history. The present must draw on the recollection of the dead to honor those dynasties. We, soon, may enter the league of extraordinary word powers that once were.
